Relationship of the Genomic Complexity of Hepatitis C Virus With Liver Disease Severity and Response to Interferon in Patients With Chronic HCV Genotype 1b Infection

Reciprocal amounts of cDNA from two isolates (A and B) producing a different SSCP pattern were mixed, amplified by PCR, and submitted to SSCP analysis (lanes 2 to 14). Bands in the upper and lower parts of the gel correspond to HCV variants present in isolate A and in isolate B, respectively. Variants representing at least 5% of the total viral population present in the mixtures produced visible bands in the gel (arrows).
