Liver Cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma)
Hepatocellular Carcinoma or HCC is liver cancer. The liver is made up of different cell types. However, liver cells (hepatocytes) make up 80% of the liver and are the primary source (90%-95%) of liver cancer. Scaring of the liver caused by cirrhosis is a primary risk factor for liver cancer. Cirrhosis may be caused by viral hepatitis, primarily hepatitis B and hepatitis C, alcohol abuse, hemochromatosis, certain autoimmune diseases of the liver, and other diseases that result in chronic inflammation of the liver.
