Federal regulators this month opened a new era in the treatment of a deadly liver virus that infects three to five times more people than HIV. Now the question is: Who will get access to the new drug for hepatitis C, and when?
The drug sofosbuvir (brand name Sovaldi) will cost $1,000 per pill. A typical course of treatment will last 12 weeks and run $84,000, plus the cost of necessary companion drugs. Some patients may need treatment for twice as long.

They should move his manufacturing to India, Pakistan, China to reduce the cost of producing 1Gm of active ingredient. Or, set up training programs for school aged individuals to inform the youngsters on how to avoid the disease.

90% profit from the drug company. I got HCV because I saved a man’s life in a terrible car accident in 1990. The government gives millions and millions of dollars to terrorist supporting countries and nothing, absolute nothing is being done about HCV patients. A $1,000 dollar pill, you have go to be kidding me. I will fight and continue to fight HCV the best I can by taking care of my liver, physical fitness and being positive. I’m not stupid, I know in time the liver will have a hard battle, but who can afford a $1,000 pill for 12 weeks?

I’ve had hep-c for over 20yrs and I am 62 now. I get less than $900 disability, so I can’t buy even 1 pill per month. I reckon there will be those that can (illegally) manufacture a pill that has the same chemicals in it, which means once again we will be forced to break the law in order to get some medication, I sure will if I have to.

Medicare should pay for these new drugs coming up. But, if anyone has NO insurance, most manufacturers have programs you apply for and they pay for it completely.

Find out who is the pharm. company making the meds you need (call Walgreen’s or other, talk to pharmacist) and ask them for a toll-free number for the pharm. company. They’ll take it from there.

If you get Medicare and/or any state aid, this may be paid for. We all might need to petition our health departments for more help, petition the Department of Health and Human Svcs., sign petitions when we see them w/out fear of being labelled, try to get articles written in newspapers and segments on TV. On our good days, this is possible for some of us and each one of us contributes something to this world.

Hello my good friends please do not see this strange cause it my life story about my healing, i was having HIV for good 6yrs. I two was fortunate to be able to start new treatment solvaldi,peg, ribavirin, last week,I have kaiser ins thur walmart would have never been able to afford it other wise its costing me $120.00 every 2 weeks.15 years sgo I failed treatment twice,praying this word viral load is 66,677 when i started.
I started my treatment 3 shots ago. Sovaldi , peg and ribavivon . First month I had United healthcare and they paid all but 500.00 of it for 2 months. Third month and no insurance. Praying Medicaid will help.
This is my second time around. First time 52 weeks with the peg inter , RIBA. Did not take.
I am genotype 4a. I’ve had it for 40+ years and caught it by chance on a blood test.

A bit beside the point, but that was such a wonderful act you did for a stranger. If you were born between 1945-1965, the CDC has found that in itself is Hepatitis C risk. Have u considered any other avenue of contracting this. Many, many people never know how they got Hepatitis C and, as you know, we’re not all druggies! Good luck to you.

Do a little research with Gilead company. They have a support group you can contact that will credit you around 24,000 plus get you hooked up on some Federal funding to help with the cost.

I was a lab rat for the Solvaldi testing, 1 pill a day plus a couple pills of ribavirin, very minimal side effects, non detectible viral load.. since June 2103..
Scott, just posted above. For 3A this site said 12 weeks with interferon. I’m guessing you didn’t take that rat poison. What were the minimal side effects?

Between 2001 and 2010 I did the interferon (rat poison) and ribo 2 times but had to stop because of bad reactions, Then I was transplanted in July 2011, still had the Hep C, In Nov 2012 I was called by IU Med Center to be in the GS-7977 research study, I said yes and did a bunch for pretesting blood work and ekg, ultrasound, MRI. then in JAN 2013 I started taking 1 pill GS-7977 per day and 1 Ribavirin pill per day, and slowly added to the ribavirin up to 3 pills AM and 3 Pills PM with test drug staying 1 time per day. Blood testing samples were taken at a various intervals testing for viral load and other body functions, After 2 weeks I was showing almost zero viral load, by the end of Feb. 2013 I was undetectable for hep C..,In June I completed taking the drugs and have tested undetectable for hep C ever since.. Side effects were fatigue and increased pancreas enzyme output but nothing serious nothing even close to the interferon.. hope this helps
Hi Scott. My story is very similar to yours. I was treated twice with intf/rbv before and after my first liver transplant in 2008. After my second transplant I start to show symptoms of HCV 1b again and was deemed unable to repeat the previous treatment, based on my condition and the severity of side effects. As death approached, the hospital approached GS for a compassionate off-label release (excluding Rbv). My life was saved by their approval (along with the FDA special clearance). My viral load was uncountable in 4 days and undetectable in 10 days. Good news, bad news. My liver damage was already irrevocable and ‘end-stage.’ Only because of my undetectable status was I permitted a THIRD transplant. They justified it with the case-study value of my situation. I became the first person on the planet to go undetectable, THEN have a liver transplant and then complete treatment regimen. I am now healthier than I’ve been in 10 years and have a liver that has never been touched by a single cell of HCV. Not only do I consider my survival to be a virtual miracle, but I just found out my liver donor attended my church for 10 years, hearing me sing in the choir, and his brother still attends. I can only pray that millions more will have the miracles with which I’ve been blessed.
Dale, Good for you, I guess we were up on the earth to be testers for this new drug, I was called to get a liver 3 times, the first was untransplantable, the second time I made it to the table and was injested with antibiotics and turns out I;m hightly allergic to Vancomycin so into anaphalaxic shock I went, quit breathing stuff all going wrong, so the Docs stabilized me and gave that liver to a Guy who met my family while wainting for me to get out of my situation.. So 2 weeks later they called me again and it was a go.. Crazy times,, Funny thing my new neighbor also A Navy Vet had a transplant for hep C 6 months after me…

I am amazed at your story, you kept trying and were rewarded. Your current liver has been touched by Hep C. You likely will “live long and prosper”, but please go at least every other year (or any other time-frame your doctor says) for a blood vial load test and every 5–10 years (if doctor agrees) get a biopsy just to keep it at bay. Otherwise, way to go.
Trotter; thanks for the warm wishes. At the same time, while your unsolicited advice is appreciated, it’s somewhat redundant. First off, if you read my notes carefully, my current liver has NOT been touched by HCV; I was undetectable by the finest HCV RNA quantification within 10 days and for weeks BEFORE my third transplant. Unlike previous semi-curative treatments like Interferon/Ribavirn, this NS5B Polymerase inhibitor specifically targets (DAA) and wipes out the ability of the virus to replicate, so once it’s gone, it’s gone. (I was even continued for 36 week just to be SURE). Besides, mine is such a unique case study, the hospital and Gilead are watching me like a hawk for the next number of years. Also, besides, all transplant patients get full panels of blood tests periodically for LIFE. The risk of a biopsy is NEVER undertaken without reason (like an elevated ALT/AST or Bilirubin) Again, thanks for the warm wishes and I hope all is well for you too.

They might as well tell us to “DROP DEAD!” Its a sick and cruel joke to announce: “We have the cure…but it will only be available to the rich!” The priorities of this world are all wrong. Political leaders have no problem spending two trillion dollars blowing up two countries and maiming thousands of their own soldiers but howl and cry about allocating any money to help sick people get their medication. As John Lennon so eloquently put it: “The world is insane…run by insane leaders.”
I am here to tell you that your insurance will pay for it medication. I too get disability and I was blessed to have the opportunity to do the treatment. Just talk to your doctor, it will be covered, I am not rich by a long shot. It has to go thru the pre authorization process, but it will be paid for.
Insurance will pay for it. I have been on the medication for about 2 weeks now. It is not bad at all.
Get busy and find a way to get on it and don’t stop trying…
I just signed up today. 3A. Doc said 12 weeks but the info I just read on this site said that is with interferon, which I have tried twice and could make it to the very bitter end. Any comments on this. Reading Scott’s email below we have the same geno and his course was 12 weeks. Also shocked at the price. I have dual insurance so hopefully it will be covered.
I was on the phase III trial of Sofobuvir & lebitasvir (GS5885) + Ribavarin. Took the drugs for 8 weeks. Genotype 1a. My viral load was undetectable after 2 weeks. this was back in June. I am still detectable. I go for 6 month post trial visit next week. These drugs are an excellent NON Interferon treatment. I’ll try to report what my blood tests reveal after my appt next week.
I started taking Solvaldi & two ribo a day…load went from 1,700,000 to 1,400 ( yes 1,400 no typo ) in a week..now they’re uping it to four ribo a day….I’m Geno 1A ..transplanted. 7/05…took interferon years ago & ended up in hospital from side effects within couple weeks..this new course made me feel flu like for a few days after that, just continued tiredness & trouble focusing on any single task….certainly worth results..cake walk compared to interferon, which I would never do again..
I do have a huge problem with the financial factor…I’m fortunate in that my insurance covers me with small ($60) copayment…I’m extremely uncomfortable with knowing people are being chosen by their ability to pay….say what you will the new pre-existing disease clause will save so many of us.
I was told I was approved to receive Solvaldi at no cost. When I talk to the pharmacy to get it, I was told my co-pay was $3,030.00. Really? I was told Medicare was going to pay for it. Isn’t that only the case if you go to your Dr’s office to get it? I’m confused.
Can you share how you were able to get Medicare or Medicaid pay for Solvaldy? Did you have to apply for Medicare Part D? A lot of people are being denied. Thanks for any info you can share.
Now I know what a fish feels like. they dangle a cure to you . But fail to make it available because of the cost. Why even get your hopes up when most people could not even afford this. Oh well as obama said maybe you should take a pain pill and die. I will never go the interferon / ribaviran therapy again Docs at mayo said it most likely be lethal in my situation. If the government can give out free cell phones than why not a cure for a disease that will end up costing them more money treating symptoms than providing a cure.

I’ve done it. Drink one gallon of water a day, quit washing your hair, use lots of lotion, sit in lots of baths, I sat in them and cried, thats a tough treatment, did not work for me but my geneo type is 1 b

And Hep C could have greatly reduced numbers of diagnosed cases in ONE generation. People born 1945-1965 account for 3/4 of Hep C diagnosis because they just “discovered” and were able to test for this disease about 1990. Universal precautions are now taken so fewer cases involving nurses, police officers, veterans, baby boomers, etc. should be happening down the road. Then, in future years, new cases should involve mostly illegal drug use, tattooing and a few other ways.
So, money spent now would go a long way towards knocking out this stupid disease. Let’s pass the word along wherever we could get help.
You can tell, we all don’t have near the money to correct this, but the government, some businesses, etc.need to step up.

Sofosbuvir (Sovaldi) will not “likely cure 90% of Hep C patients.” It will likely cure way less. There has not been, nor is there likely to be, the claimed success rate as per the studies. No Hep C drug has come close to the claimed success rate and there’s no reason to think that sofosbuvir will either.
The claimed success rate is also just for 1b, not the most prevalent (in the US) 1a. 1a still requires interferon (24 weeks if interferon is not an option) and, nor non-responders, the svr is more like 70% in the studies (most of which were only 1b for the phase III)
We also do not know, nor understand, the possible side effects. The question to ask ones self and ones doctor is “do you believe the studies and what studies were done that were not published and not in the public domain?
Everyone has particular reasons for trying this treatment, you don’t really know much but you sure have an opinion. You are a pessimist. Enjoy your act…
Not a pessimist — a realist. There’s a big difference in that I stated facts and probabilities (which one can easily verify — ask you doctor or read the research.)
If one thinks the potential harm of the treatment outweighs the benefits (which is the case in all treatments for all diseases) and can afford it, one should definitely go for it. But the decision should be based on actual evidence with as complete a data set as possible — not big pharmas’ marketing hype. If interferon was not required and I could afford the treatment I would take my chances.

Started Sovaldi New Years Eve hoping to make 2014 a healthier year for me. I was diagnosed in Jan 2013 with hep c genotype 1A. My doctor told me that Sovaldi would be approved in Dec. 2013, he gave me a choice to start the 48 week treatment or wait. I decided to wait after reading what my life would be like with the side effects. After 2 weeks on Sovaldi, Ribaravin and interferon my blood work came back undetectable. It’s been 4 weeks now and have 8 to go. It hasn’t been easy since my energy level dropped to 0, but happy I decided to wait. I went on the Sovaldi website and received a card for a $5.00 copay for the drug. Don’t give up, fight and believe!
Listen, I went to the Gilead Sovaldi web site when this drug first came out, I am taking interferon and sovaldi with Riba Pak, been on it for 8 weeks now and have no virus in my system at 8 weeks, also the helped me pay, does not cost me much at all, there are alot of people out there with excuses not to take the shots, but with the sovaldi, it works, you can put up with a lot of misery for 12 weeks, just do it and get well brothers and sisters

I have Medicaid/Medicare and am currently taking Solvaldi. The total cost for my (24) month regiment of this and the companion Ribapak is 202,046.00 for medicine alone (not including hospital visits for blood work bi-monthly and doctor visits. Medicaid/Medicare pays for it all. The only thing I see holding anyone back from benefiting this new drug is getting off your lack-a-daisy asses and getting you some.. 🙂

Are there any petitions to make this drug available to those on Medicare/Medicaid who are suffering from various maladies brought on by the hepatitis C virus? Surely, it would cost the state less to supply this drug than it would to continue to treat us for the many problems created by the virus itself. Hello my good friends please do not see this strange cause it my life story about my healing, i was having HIV for good 6yrs. I discovered my type 1b hep ince 1997 and probably had it 10 years before that. I have refused treatment all these years because the numbers didn’t impress me. Of the friends who have taken treatment 3 with responsive geno types were cleared. I say hell no. I’ll do what I can be be healthy and at 63 try to out live my liver. I do get regular hep checks just to see where I’m at. What I want to know is if it is common for the viral load to go up and down. Comparing results from the same lab and test proceedure my load in 2011 was over 5 mil and my load in June 2014 was a little over 2 mil.
My blood sugar was just a little low this time and my AST was high & everything else was good. The nurse blew off the VL drop as no big deal saying I go up and down & wants me to try the new 1 pill treatment coming out in Aug that has been very effective on the thus far non responsive 1b’s.
